Murray County adds $250,000 to septic loan program as demand outpaces budget

Murray County commissioners voted Sept. 16 to increase the 2025 Septic Loan Program by $250,000 after county staff said the program's initial $250,000 appropriation had already been committed to 12 systems.
County staff reported there are eight additional pending requests for septic systems this construction season with an estimated combined cost of $176,600 and noted there could be more requests before the season ends. The board approved the additional $250,000 to account 01-634-637-6915; loans will be issued at 4% interest with options for 5- or 10-year repayment terms. The motion to allocate additional funds was moved by Commissioner Mark Carlson and seconded by Commissioner Roger Zins.
Carolyn McDonald, the county administrator, explained the county's intent is to cover submitted applications and preserve public health by ensuring necessary septic installations can proceed before winter. The board did not attach further eligibility changes to the loan terms during the meeting.
The additional allocation aims to address immediate demand; county staff will continue to accept and process applications in the order received and report back to the board if further budget adjustments are necessary.
