Board approves fairgrounds rental for Makotah Reconciliation ride if liability insurance provided

Presenters Justin Hoffmann and Bob Ossefoort asked the board on Nov. 25 to rent the 4‑H building and stable horses overnight for the Makotah Reconciliation and Healing Horse Ride scheduled to pass through Slayton on Dec. 19. The county’s standard practice requires a certificate of liability insurance for facility rentals; the organization requested a waiver but staff and the board continued to require proof of coverage.
Commissioner Roger Zins moved and Commissioner Loy Woelber seconded to approve the fairgrounds rental on Dec. 19–20, 2025 pending receipt of a certificate of liability insurance; the motion passed. Commissioner Mark Carlson said he would pursue donations to cover the rental fee if the certificate is provided.
The board encouraged organizers to consult other event organizers about insurance providers and to return with documentation; no waiver of the insurance requirement was granted at the meeting.
