Marshall County approves $23,000 water-softener purchase as jail project nears reopening

Marshall County commissioners on March 3 approved installation of a water-softener unit in the Law Enforcement area as part of the ongoing jail remodel project, a purchase the board estimated at about $23,000.
Sheriff Jason Boman and Jail Administrator Mark Ellerbusch told the board that law-enforcement staff have moved back into the Law Enforcement Building and that once new locks are installed the Minnesota Department of Corrections will perform a final review that would allow the county to resume housing inmates. Commissioner Jim Duckstad moved the water-softener purchase; Commissioner Sharon Bring seconded the motion, which carried 5-0.
Maintenance Supervisor Rodger Haugtvedt described outstanding building maintenance needs and said he will solicit additional quotes for repairs. Deputy Auditor/Treasurer Sue Peterson joined that discussion to outline possible funding options.
Boman also said the county plans to have a School Resource Officer in place for all schools in the future and that the board toured the jail facility during the meeting. The purchase approved on March 3 is part of repairs and upgrades the county has been completing to meet facility and security requirements ahead of the Department of Corrections review.
The Board voted unanimously on the purchase. No timeline for the DOC review or inmate housing resumption was given during the meeting.
