Belgrade library welcomes new youth services librarian; receives $14,900 ADA grant for Braille and assistive tools

Kathleen, the librarys newly hired youth services librarian, introduced herself to the Belgrade Library Advisory Board and said she is excited to expand childrens programming after serving 12 years in a library specialist role. "I have been the primary backup for children's services for the last several years," Kathleen said, adding she looks forward to working with families and the Belgrade community.
Elena, the library director, told the board the library secured a $14,900 grant through the foundation dedicated to ADA compliance tools and childrens Braille storybooks. "We secured a $14,900 grant dedicated to ADA compliance tools and children's story time braille books," Elena said. The library has already purchased a large-print keyboard, a portable magnifier, an LED magnifier and several childrens Braille books and plans to add those items to the collection and announce availability once processing is complete.
Elena described titles bought or ordered for the childrens Braille collection, including Green Eggs and Ham, Who Was King Tut, Who Was Rosa Parks, Babe Ruth Saves Baseball, Bridge to Terabithia and Anne of Green Gables. The director said a hearing loop for the front desk is still under consideration once staff determine the best room-placement and technical requirements.
Board members congratulated Kathleen on her appointment and asked how she and staff will manage the transition while filling her former role; Elena said the library has signed a new library specialist who holds an MLIS and is expected to start in March. The library also plans to publicize the ADA purchases and incorporate accessibility items into upcoming youth storytimes and events.
Next steps: the library will formally add the purchased accessibility equipment and Braille books to its catalog and announce them to patrons when the items are available. The board will review foundation-related items at a joint foundation meeting scheduled in March.
