Charlevoix County will participate in the Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) Urgent Need Program and accept $16,000 to support food assistance for communities impacted by the March 2025 ice storm, Emergency Management Coordinator Sienna Wentz told the board on Feb. 11.
Wentz said the county qualified for the funds under an executive order declaring a state of emergency for the storm; the proposed plan is to purchase protein items for distribution to local food pantries. The board voted 5-0 to accept the grant agreement.
The board also adopted Resolution #26-017 to update the county's CDBG homeowner rehabilitation program guidelines. The updated guidelines clarify how Program Income Funds may be spent on emergency repairs to benefit very low- and moderate-income households in Charlevoix County; the resolution passed on a 5-0 roll-call vote.
Actions on both the grant acceptance and guideline changes were taken on Feb. 11; staff will implement the grant purchase plan and apply the new guidelines to the homeowner rehabilitation program going forward.
