Cameron County pledges $50,000 match for Mee Foundation recreation grant; approves network upgrade and Penn Pallet loan

Commissioner Herzing brought the motion to commit the match and Commissioner Moate seconded; the board approved the letter of commitment without recorded opposition. The commitment follows a notice the county received from the Mee Foundation that it awarded Cameron County a $50,000 challenge grant toward the renovation effort.
Separately, the commissioners approved a $22,343.26 payment to ACS for network updates and equipment for the Recreation Center, with the expense allocated from ACT 13 funds. Commissioner Zucal made the motion to approve the ACT 13 payment; Commissioner Moate seconded and the motion passed unanimously.
The board also approved a 10-year loan, arranged through the county Industrial Development Authority, to Penn Pallet for $150,000 at an interest rate of 1.5%. Commissioner Zucal moved the loan approval, Commissioner Moate seconded, and the measure passed on a unanimous vote. During the meeting’s Good of the Order, visitor Marilyn Erickson asked whether the 1.5% interest rate was typical and whether the loan would create jobs; attendee Cliff Clark said, “the 1.5% interest rate is standard,” and stated the company hopes to add three employees initially with plans to expand to about 12.
Commissioners said support from the Mee Foundation could extend beyond building renovation to include amenities such as pickleball courts, but they cautioned that costs have not yet been researched. The board suggested next steps include a feasibility study and pursuing small community grant opportunities for specific amenities.
The meeting record shows all motions carried with all commissioners voting in favor. The board also confirmed routine administrative items including election grant closeout activities and training dates. The commissioners adjourned at 11:31 a.m.; the next regular meeting is scheduled for March 5, 2026 at the Cameron County Courthouse in Emporium.
