Charlotte County Electoral Board outlines COVID-19 safety, staffing and voting timelines ahead of June 23 primary

The Charlotte County Electoral Board on May 6 outlined preparations for the June 23 primary, including receipt of personal protective equipment from the Commonwealth and contingency planning for staffing and polling-place cleaning.
Registrar Ms. Lambert said the Commonwealth will provide shields, masks, gloves and sanitizer for each Officer of Election for the primary, and that each voter will be supplied a writing instrument to take with them from the polling place. Assistant Registrar Goode told the board the items will be sent by precinct for distribution.
Ms. Lambert also said absentee voting opens May 8 and that beginning May 11 voters may come to the Registrar’s office to cast ballots in person; voters may request vote-by-mail ballots from the Registrar’s office. The deadline to register to vote for the June 23 primary was extended to May 26.
The Registrar reported outreach to past Officers of Election to confirm their willingness to serve on June 23; she said three responses had been received at the time of the meeting, two indicating willingness and one declining. Ms. Lambert said she has asked the Commonwealth what procedures should be followed if the pandemic results in insufficient staffing at polling places and expects answers by the June meeting.
The Board discussed whether the county's current cleaning contract could cover polling places after the primary. Mr. Hamlett, Chair of the Board of Supervisors, told the Registrar the cleaning service is not included in the contract but that he will contact the contractor to determine if a suitable arrangement can be worked out.
Assistant Registrar Goode reported training dates for Officers of Election on June 16, 17 and 18, with Secretary Robert Bradner assisting June 16, Vice‑Chair Lawrence Clark on June 17 and Chair Glenwood Foster on June 18.
The meeting ended on a motion by Secretary Bradner, seconded by Vice‑Chair Clark; the motion passed without dissent and the Chair declared the meeting adjourned.
