DNR requires 17 stalls for Sand Lake boat landing; county explores funding options

Highway Commissioner Alex Hegeman updated the committee on CTH D Sand Lake boat landing requirements and funding Feb. 5, saying the Department of Natural Resources requires at least 17 parking stalls to meet defined public-access standards.
Hegeman said a request for an additional $800,000 — primarily to fund a new driveway — was unlikely to be approved by the Department of Transportation, so the DOT agreed to leave the entrance where it currently sits. He also reported a $200,000 request to complete a bridge is likely to be approved. Hegeman said he has not applied for a WVIC grant because firm numbers were not yet available, but he has inquired about purchasing a ramp plank that the WVIC builds in-house.
Committee members discussed management and revenue options. Robb Jensen suggested transferring the landing to Forestry so the Highway Department can focus on the bridge project; Fried said the landing should generate some revenue even if transferred. Hegeman said he would bring a proposal for a launch fee to a future meeting and follow up with additional permitting and fee-management information.
