Belgrade parks staff report: pump track approved, staffing moves and software rollout underway

Jordan Green, Parks and Recreation Director, said well pump testing at Sunnyside Park met consultant and public works standards though crews are flushing sand from the system; that allowed the consultant to advance final site design. He also reported that the police department is increasing patrols at Prairie View Park amid speeding concerns and that staff are exploring a citywide parks speed limit as a potential capital/budget project.
“The big news of the day is of course the pump track,” Green said, reporting that the city council approved construction of the pump track portion of Mayfair Meadows Park and community response has been positive.
Staff announced the selection of Dustin Smith as permanent parks foreperson and the hiring of a city forester (Joe) from the private sector to assist with urban forest management and tree care. Green said the department is working with Cushing Terrell on a forestry assessment and expects to discuss a tree guide at a forthcoming city council workshop.
Operational updates included splash pad repairs and paint testing with Sherwin-Williams, early rollout preparation for Civic Rec reservation software, and a trails outreach meeting with Montana State University students exploring connectivity projects.
Board members asked clarifying questions about jurisdiction for park speed limits and whether cameras could be installed at the splash pad; Green said staff are seeking camera quotes and exploring a public-facing camera page for the website. A board member asked whether Belgrade has a leash law; staff confirmed that dogs must be leashed in parks and are only allowed off-leash on private property.
The meeting ended after director reports, the board adjourned and staff said they will return with updates as projects move into construction and review stages.
