Resident asks Spencer County for help maintaining Little Mount Colored Cemetery

Irvine described the cemetery as among the largest historically Black burial grounds in the county and asked the court to help with upkeep.
Taylorsville City Commissioner Roy Bell said he had been contacted by "Ms. Scott" and had discussed the county's history with "Ms. Cooper," noting that Irvine had photographs showing the veterinarian's office building from a time when it had been a school. The court did not record a formal action in response to the request during the Jan. 20 meeting.
Why it matters: Preservation and maintenance of historic cemeteries, particularly those associated with historically marginalized communities, raises questions about county resources, ownership and long-term stewardship.
The court took no further action in the meeting minutes beyond hearing the request and noting the discussion from the Taylorsville commissioner.
