Fire Chief Leslie Goodrum introduced two firefighters who recently completed a 13‑week fire academy and graduated: Justin McMillin and Rondall Gingerich. The court recognized the graduates during the Dec. 2 meeting.
The fiscal court approved advertising for bids on a Maintenance/Fire Department building with bids due Feb. 27, 2026 and an award anticipated in March 2026. Magistrate Marty Chandler moved to advertise; Magistrate Scott Poston seconded and the motion passed with Magistrate Jeffrey Burr recused.
Chief Goodrum discussed surplus equipment and operational needs: a 1979 Ford F800 pumper/tanker (VIN V80VJAJ7956) with a 2,600‑gallon steel tank and a 500 GPM Hale front‑mounted pump (with pump‑and‑roll capability). He also noted a smoke trailer used for public education is stored under a cover and suggested that purchasing a carport cover might be cheaper than adding building footage. Separately, Judge Barnes and Chief Goodrum discussed disposing of approximately 20 old self‑contained breathing apparatus (SCBA). The court authorized disposal in the manner allowed by KRS 45(A).425 and KRS 67.802, with air cylinders to be drilled prior to disposal.
The record also shows a budget transfer moving $2,250 into a Fire Department part‑time personnel line and a note that one fire department position remains to be filled. The court adjourned at 9:37 a.m.
Why it matters: maintaining staffing and apparatus readiness is central to county public safety; advertising for a new or renovated fire/maintenance building and managing surplus equipment are near‑term operational decisions.
What happens next: bids will be advertised and opened per the Feb. 27, 2026 schedule; the county will proceed with authorized disposal of obsolete SCBA in accordance with applicable KRS provisions.
