Fiscal Court to subsidize $20 monthly gym memberships for county employees

The Simpson County Fiscal Court approved an employee fitness program Dec. 16 that will pay $20 per month toward memberships at The Grande and Fuel Fortress, effective Jan. 1.
Under the approved plan, the county will be billed for the $20 subsidy and employees will pay any remaining balance. Sheriff Jere D. Hopson recommended the county set up memberships at the gyms in the county's name so the county is billed directly, similar to how the local school system manages memberships. Judge Mason Bames supported that approach to simplify billing.
The court discussed an earlier proposal that would have required employees to attend the gym at least eight times per month to receive the county benefit; the approved motion does not record an attendance requirement.
The motion passed on a vote with Magistrates Thurman, Poston, Chandler and Judge Bames voting yes and Magistrate Burr recused. The cost to the county will depend on employee participation; the county did not specify the number of participating employees at the meeting.
