Simpson County approves new jail food vendor and inmate telecommunications system; jail reports 146 state inmates

Simpson County Fiscal Court on Jan. 6 awarded the county jail food services contract to Kellwell Food Management and approved a Combined Public Communications Inmate Telecommunications General Service Agreement that county officials said will add tracking to inmate communications with no cost to the county.
The court authorized the County Judge to sign the food contract. Meeting minutes record that the per-meal rate for the new contract rose by $0.15 from the previous year. The telecommunications system was described as a tool for investigative purposes for the jail, police and sheriff's offices and will be accessible to the Kentucky State Police.
Jailer Vaughn reported the jail held 146 state inmates as of Monday, Jan. 5, 2026, and said the population was decreasing compared with recent levels. The minutes note county officials portrayed the telephone/tracking system addition as not imposing a cost on the county.
Both items were approved by unanimous vote; motions and seconders were recorded in the official minutes. There was no public comment recorded on the contracts during the meeting.
