Sevier County commissioners vote to pursue leasing two downtown surface lots for short-term parking

Sevier County commissioners voted Jan. 23 to authorize the Mayor’s Office to enter discussions with Citizens National Bank and the City of Sevierville to lease two CNB surface lots and to inquire about a vacant lot between those lots and the Sheriff’s Office as a short-term downtown parking solution.
Mayor Larry Waters told the committee the county has approximately 185 county-designated spots (which could be rearranged to about 200), roughly 170 employee spots, and that employee parking needs are expected to grow to about 250 after completion of the Courts Building. Since that construction began, employees and customers have used county lots and two CNB surface lots; the City of Sevierville has taken the lead in talks with CNB. An initial proposed lease was for $200,000 over two years, and the city agreed to a potential cost split with the county.
Commissioner Warren Hurst moved the Mayor’s Office be authorized to enter discussions with CNB and the City and to inquire about the vacant gross lot; Commissioner Bryan Delius seconded. The motion passed unanimously. Commissioner Bryan Delius requested that a task force also study parking logistics and future county department relocations, and Commissioner Fred Atchley requested that a Budget Committee member be included on that task force.
Next steps: the Mayor’s Office will pursue the discussions with CNB and the City and return with recommended short-term arrangements and any task-force proposals.
