Bland County supervisors unanimously raise meals tax to 6% and approve 40-cent cigarette tax

The board opened and closed the public hearing on the FY2022 county and school budget with no testimony, Chairman Stephen Kelley said at the start of the meeting. The public hearing was recorded but yielded no public comments.
On a motion by Supervisor Adam Kidd, seconded by Supervisor Randy Johnson, the board adopted amendments to Bland County Code Sec. 50-257 to raise the meals tax to 6 percent, effective July 1, 2021. The clerk recorded a roll-call vote: Kidd—yea; Johnson—yea; Hodock—yea; Kelley—yea. The motion passed unanimously.
Later in the meeting the board considered ordinances in Article XV of the Bland County Code to impose a cigarette tax. Supervisor Randy Johnson moved to adopt the ordinance establishing a cigarette tax of 40 cents per pack, effective Jan. 1, 2022; Supervisor Adam Kidd seconded. The board again voted unanimously: Johnson—yea; Kidd—yea; Hodock—yea; Kelley—yea.
County officials present included Dr. Eric Workman, county administrator; Paul Cassell, county attorney; and Teresa Tolbert, finance director. The meeting record shows Linda Miller also listed as present. The board recessed until Friday, May 7, 2021 at 4:00 p.m. in the Bland County Courthouse.
What happened next: The board announced the recess and set a reconvening for May 7 to continue business and any follow-up on the FY2022 budget process.
