Board authorizes sale of Gary Road parcel, joins rural solar coalition and discusses landfill changes

The Lunenburg County Board of Supervisors on March 12 unanimously approved multiple land, energy and waste-management items.
After returning from a closed session, the board authorized Chairman Charles R. Slayton to sign an agreement to sell 2.3 acres on Gary Road to Mr. Jerry Killen and to advertise a public hearing on the sale.
The board also voted to join a multi-county rural solar coalition at a cost of $5,000. The coalition will develop model regulations and lobby the General Assembly on issues affecting large-scale solar facilities in rural areas.
Administrator Tracy M. Gee reported that opening the Gary Road Convenience Site would allow the county to close four unmanned convenience sites within one to two weeks; she warned that the Gigg Road and Potts Spring Road sites could see increased trash and that some sites are affected by out-of-county waste. The board discussed the landfill liaison’s report about intermittent strong odors at the landfill during cover-peel operations and the county attorney’s note that the landfill has not met the 1,000-tons-per-day threshold that would increase the county per-ton fee to $2.00.
All motions on these items were recorded as unanimously approved in the minutes; the sale will go forward to public hearing, and the rural solar participation commitment was authorized for $5,000.
