County Administrator Tracy M. Gee told supervisors May 14 that complaints of a pungent odor at the landfill stemmed from work on an old cell; contractor CFS installed fragrance pumping systems at two locations to help. Gee said the Gary Road Convenience Center opened April 25 and traffic has been slowly increasing.
Supervisor Alvester Edmonds relayed a resident complaint that tire disposal fees had risen from $5 to $15; Administrator Gee said the landfill manager reduced several fees and moved to a sliding-scale policy. Landfill liaison Carl Ashworth also reported conversations with the manager about fee reductions.
Administrator Gee said Meherrin Volunteer Fire & Rescue requested to use $7,133.42 in capital funds as a grant match purchase for two Zoll X Series cardiac monitors; Gee said the department has capital funds available and would roll over about $10,000 to the next fiscal year. The board also approved declaring 66 three-ring binders and a broken four-drawer filing cabinet from the Department of Social Services as surplus. Other administrative notes included staggered staffing to reduce COVID-19 transmission, the county's audit engagement letter with Robinson Farmer Cox, and notification of a Piedmont Court Services director retiring July 31, 2020.
