Board approves up to $35,000 for fire station roofs; landfill dumping and Route 635 truck study flagged

Lunenburg County supervisors on June 11 approved a request from Victoria Fire & Rescue to use up to $35,000 in capital funds to repair the almost 30-year-old roof at Station 2 in Victoria (the full quote for that roof was $27,552) and to apply remaining funds toward repairs at Station 7 in Kenbridge.
Chief Rodney Newton requested the funds; the motion to allow Victoria Fire & Rescue to use up to $35,000 was approved by unanimous roll-call vote.
Earlier in the meeting Administrator Tracy M. Gee told the Board that VDOT Residency Administrator Tommy Johnson reported the Secondary Six Year Plan projects will proceed and that VDOT is running a traffic study on Route 635 to examine a rise in transfer-truck accidents; results were expected in about 90 days. Administrator Gee also reported an unprecedented amount of illegal dumping at unmanned landfill sites and at the courthouse site, with evidence of out-of-county residents and businesses using county sites. She suggested closing unmanned sites or manning the courthouse site; Supervisor T. Wayne Hoover opposed closing the courthouse site and suggested the surplus dumping may ease as pandemic-related home cleanups subside.
