School Superintendent Charles Berkley told the Lunenburg County Board on June 11 that a task force is developing reopening plans and projects an August 17 start date featuring a hybrid model of alternating in-person and virtual learning days. The plan would group students into two cohorts that alternate attendance and require masks; Berkley said desks would be spaced six to ten feet apart and teachers would move between classrooms where practical so students remain stationary.
Berkley said temperatures would be checked and students asked screening questions before being allowed into school buildings. He reported an estimated average daily membership of 1,530 for the coming year and said schools are ordering cleaning and sanitizing materials.
Assistant Superintendent and Finance Director James Abernathy told the Board federal funds available to the division are low but continuing through August, that textbook funds will buy new English textbooks for the high school, and that he is preparing an application for CARES Act funds to support distance learning; the amount expected is not yet specified.
