Lunenburg sets aside $400,000 from CARES funds for small‑business grants; towns and schools to receive $15,000 each

County Administrator Tracy M. Gee told the board on July 9 that a CARES Act committee (Gee, Supervisors T. Wayne Hoover and Alvester Edmonds) agreed to appropriate $15,000 to each town and $15,000 to the school system to assist with pandemic response. Gee said a separate CARES fund has been set up and that all invoices should be forwarded to the County Administration Office for payment to ensure proper tracking.
The committee earmarked $400,000 of CARES funds for small‑business grants to be awarded in increments of $5,000, $7,500 and $10,000, with the possibility of an additional round of awards later in the year depending on remaining funds and pandemic conditions. Gee said the committee will finalize the application process and award criteria based on its recommendations.
Gee also reported that a June 27 COVID‑19 testing event in Lunenburg performed 377 tests with two positive results, and she thanked local volunteers and Piedmont Health District staff for coordinating the event.
The board did not vote on the application details at the meeting; Administrator Gee said staff would return with the final application and award schedule for the board’s information or approval as required.
