County planner reports demolition bids, asbestos costs and broadband funding; administrator notes airport tenant departure

County Planner Glenn Millican told the Board on Oct. 8 that bid documents have been released for demolition of the old middle school and he estimates asbestos removal will require an additional $100,000–$125,000. Millican asked supervisors to join the Planning Commission for a joint work session on solar facilities scheduled for Oct. 20 at 5 p.m.
Millican also noted the Virginia governor’s office announced an additional $30 million in broadband funding to assist rural areas; he said Dominion Power is piloting a rural broadband program and that the county will share details when available.
Administrator Tracy M. Gee reported that No Limits Skydiving will no longer operate at the Lunenburg Airport because the operator reduced expenses during the pandemic. Gee said she is coordinating with local alumni to set a date for unveiling Civil Rights in Education Heritage Trail signs at the former Lunenburg High School site on K‑V Road and at the Peoples Community Center. Gee also noted Meridian Waste will host a Recycling Day Oct. 10 in the Central High School parking lot.
The Board took no additional formal action on the demolition estimates, broadband news or airport tenant departure during the meeting; Millican and administration staff will return with further details as they become available.
