Lunenburg supervisors approve updated school, county budgets and schedule hearing on $1.06M CARES allocation

LUNENBURG, Va. — The Lunenburg County Board of Supervisors on Aug. 13 approved updates to the county and school budgets that account for state adjustments and federal COVID‑19 relief, and scheduled a public hearing to consider an additional $1,064,054 in CARES Act funding.
Administrator Tracy M. Gee told the Board the state’s post‑budget adjustments (commonly referenced in the transcript as the “Caboose Bill” and related amendments) added $417,625 in state funds to the school division’s FY2020 budget, bringing the school total to $18,518,401 and the county total for FY2020 to $35,282,153. The Board voted to adopt the updated figures by roll call.
Gee also said the county expected a second round of CARES Act funds totaling $1,064,054 and that, under Code of Virginia §15.2‑2507, any locality budget amendment exceeding 1% must be advertised for public hearing before approval. The Board approved holding that public hearing at its September meeting.
The Board discussed recommended uses for the CARES allocation. The county’s CARES committee proposed purchasing an ambulance for Victoria Fire & Rescue, funding 40% of an ambulance for Meherrin Fire & Rescue (with Prince Edward County covering the remaining 60%), and fully funding monitors. Supervisors approved scheduling the public hearing to consider these and other allocations.
At the meeting, Assistant Superintendent and Finance Director James Abernathy confirmed the first round of CARES funds to the school division was $465,285 and said timing of federal reimbursement requests affects when revenue is realized. "We have requested funds for the second round of funds but will not know if they are approved for a few weeks," Abernathy said.
The Board’s actions on budget updates were recorded by roll call; where noted in the minutes, all seven supervisors voted yes on the motions.
What’s next: The Board will hold a public hearing in September on amending the FY2020‑21 budget to include the second CARES allocation and will consider formal approval of specific expenditures after that hearing.
