Benzie County commissioners approve ARPA-funded Animal Control sewer hookup, authorize year-end transfers and other routine items

BEULAH, Mich. — The Benzie County Board of Commissioners on Sept. 26 approved a string of routine administrative and service measures, including an ARPA-funded water and sewer connection for Animal Control, authorization for year-end interfund transfers, and several contract and property actions.
The board voted to accept AJ's Excavating’s proposal not to exceed $74,905 to connect the county Animal Control facility to village water and sewer, with the expense to be paid from American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) funds. Commissioner Gary Sauer moved the measure and Commissioner Tim Markey seconded; the motion passed with six ayes and one nay (Commissioner Rhonda Nye opposed).
The board also granted the county treasurer authority to make interfund transfers to close out the fiscal year. That motion, moved by Commissioner Warsecke and seconded by Commissioner Markey, passed on a unanimous roll call.
Other approved items included declaring a 2017 Dodge Charger surplus and authorizing its sale on the Mi-Bid Internet Auction system with proceeds to the equipment replacement fund; approving Amendment 3 to the Canteen Services agreement for jail food supplies and authorizing the chair to sign; and authorizing a letter of support for Platte Township’s Consumers Energy grant application to upgrade the Platte Township Hall. Those measures passed unanimously.
Bills totaling $541,110.40 for Sept. 8–21, 2023 were approved on a unanimous roll call vote earlier in the meeting.
The meeting also included departmental reports: Undersheriff Greg Hubers updated the board on vehicle and equipment sales and jail revenue from Grand Traverse County inmates; Bert Gale of Associated Governmental Services delivered the Building Department quarterly report; EMS Director Tom King submitted a written report; and Doug Durand of Benzie Senior Resources provided a written update with Sabra Boyle available to answer questions.
The board adjourned at 11:26 a.m.
