Barry County panel recommends pay-step LOUs for sheriff and corrections deputies

The Barry County Board of Commissioners Personnel & Human Services Committee on Aug. 15 recommended approval of two letters of understanding (LOUs) establishing new-hire pay steps for sheriff deputies and corrections deputies during its meeting in Commission Chambers.
Sheriff Dar Leaf presented both items. Commissioner Catherine Getty moved to recommend approval of the LOU for the Sheriff Deputies Unit regarding the new-hire pay step; Commissioner Mike Callton seconded. The committee recorded "Ayes: All; Nays: None; Absent: Jackson," and the motion carried. The committee then moved, seconded and recorded the same outcome for an LOU covering the Corrections Division.
Both motions were explicitly framed as recommendations to the full Board of Commissioners for final action. The committee also approved its June 20, 2024 meeting minutes (moved by Getty; seconded by Callton) by the same unanimous vote among members present.
County Administrator Michael Brown provided a brief informational update about the Elected Officials Compensation Commission, bargaining units and various boards; the minutes record the update as informational and include no formal direction or vote.
