Houghton County approves bills, payments, marina survey and Canal View appraisal; YouTube posting begins in February

At its Jan. 13 meeting, the Houghton County Board of Commissioners approved routine financial and administrative items, including payment of $1,193,339.39 in bills and several vendor and service payments.
Commissioners approved two payment requests to Tri County Public Defenders — $70,982.78 for November 2025 and $66,917.39 for December 2025 — by voice vote. The board also accepted an engineering survey for the county marina and approved a $5,000 appraisal quote for Canal View.
Chairman Tom Tikkanen read a letter of support for an IT staff member and the board voted to have Alex (IT) begin posting meeting recordings to YouTube beginning with the February 2026 meeting; Alex indicated the service is free. The board approved appropriations including a $500 UPEDA membership and $13,707.91 to Copper Country Community Mental Health.
Appointments approved included Easton Laitila to the Houghton County Land Bank Authority, reappointment of Commissioner Anderson to the Land Bank Authority (Anderson abstained from that vote), and Sharon Foix to the Jury Commission Board. The Finance Committee was given alternates: Chairman Tikkanen, Commissioner Britz and Commissioner Janssen.
Most motions passed by voice vote with unanimous support; no significant debate accompanied these consent and administrative approvals.
