Houghton County authorizes administrator to pursue $500,000 CDBG housing-rehab application

Houghton County commissioners voted Jan. 13 to authorize Administrator Rheault to work with local housing advocates on applying to Michigan State Housing Development Authority (MSHDA) for Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) funding.
Lisa McKenzie and Mary Ellen Hyttinen briefed the board on the MI Hope program’s end in April 2026 and said they intend to pursue a CDBG single-family housing rehabilitation award of $500,000, which they estimate could repair up to 20 homes in the county. McKenzie said the state has $10 million available for similar projects over the next five years and that the application process (letter of intent, reservation, full application) is time-consuming.
Commissioner Glenn Anderson moved and Commissioner Gretchen Janssen seconded a motion authorizing Administrator Rheault to assist with the February 4, 2026 letter of intent and subsequent application. The motion passed unanimously, 5–0.
McKenzie asked that the Administrator or Treasurer’s Office help with the letter of intent and final application. The board did not commit county matching funds at the Jan. 13 meeting; the motion authorizes staff assistance with the application process only.
