Houghton County administrator warns audit could be delayed as CPA has not requested documents

County Administrator Rheault told the Houghton County Board of Commissioners on Jan. 5 that the county’s contract with auditing firm Anderson and Tackman is in its final year and that the firm has not yet requested the documents needed to begin the next audit.
Rheault said she had asked for the audit to start earlier, in December, but was informed the audit could not begin until February 2026. “I have received no response, and the CPA has not requested any documents,” she said, and added that she hopes the CPA will process the audit on time.
Faith Morrison, a member of the public who spoke during the work session, suggested the board raise the timing of audits and related communication during contract negotiations in the future. The board did not take formal action at the work session on the audit schedule; Rheault did not provide a new firm response schedule during the meeting.
The issue, as described by the administrator, is procedural and administrative: it concerns the county's ability to provide required materials and the auditing firm’s timeline. Commissioners will receive the audit status through staff updates; Rheault said she will continue to follow up with the CPA.
