County hears $217,000 estimate for courthouse single‑point‑of‑entry; ARPA funds and staffing debated

Houghton County commissioners reviewed revised cost estimates on Feb. 2, 2026, for a courthouse single point of entry, with a renovation estimate of $192,796 dated Jan. 26 and a total cost including engineering of roughly $217,046.
Why it matters: The single-point-of-entry project is a security and operations change that would require equipment purchases, added staff and capital funding; the sheriff’s office requested staffing for three positions, which would increase payroll costs.
Administrator Rheault reported Easton is working on ARPA funding possibilities and the board said it committed to the single-point-of-entry concept. Todd LaRoux presented the revised cost plan and noted the addition of a full scanner could cost about $16,000 and would require staffing to operate.
Commissioners discussed grant opportunities and prior letters dating to 2018. Tikkanen suggested checking available ARPA funds and forming a committee to move the project forward. The board designated Commissioners Keranen and Britz plus Administrator Rheault as a Single Point of Entry Committee and Rheault will place the item on the next week’s agenda for follow-up.
Next steps: The committee will assess funding sources, firm up cost estimates and return with a financial recommendation to the board.
