Residents urge action on sheriff vacancies, paving and the Manning Avenue Bridge during public comment

Several citizens used the Jan. 25 public-comment period to press Sumter County Council on local infrastructure and public-safety issues.
George Bates urged the council to fill vacant positions in the Sheriff’s Office so deputies can protect the community and thanked Clerk Mary Blanding for her long service. He also asked that the county contact the State Highway Department about road repairs. “I am pleading with Council to please fill these positions so that the Sheriff’s staff can get to work and protect this County from many different crimes,” Bates said.
Catherine Washington represented residents on Pasture Road in Wedgefield and provided the clerk with a petition signed by 11 people asking that Pasture Road be included in the 2022 Penny for Progress referendum for paving. Councilman Carlton B. Washington said he had submitted the street as one of his priorities for the capital projects discussion.
Dr. Brenda Williams of Family United Incorporated thanked Council for ARPA funding that supported the organization’s work and urged officials to encourage responsible parties to replace or close the Manning Avenue Bridge until repairs can make it safe.
Jackie Hughes invited council members to the Annual American Legion Public Safety Banquet on Feb. 7, 2022. The minutes record these public comments and showed no formal council action during public comment, though council members acknowledged receipt of petitions and noted support for some requests.
