Residents urge pedestrian safety measures after student death; resident seeks complaint reporting system

Samuel Myers, a Walnut Hill resident, said a Sumter School District student was killed while trying to cross Highway 378; he told council he had requested SCDOT crash details (whether crashes were vehicle-on-vehicle or vehicle-on-person) and said he would share the data with council when received. Myers urged council to consider a pedestrian crossing or bridge, to reassess the speed zone on that stretch of Highway 378, and to work with the Sumter County Regional Transit Authority (SWRTA) to develop transit routes for Walnut Hill residents.
Resident Lewis Watkins asked the council to implement a complaint-number system and to provide a Service Delivery Report to council; he said such reporting could be used as a budgeting mechanism. The minutes do not record a formal response beyond general directions to contact Public Works for service follow-up.
No formal motions or votes were recorded as a result of these comments; council adjourned after other business.
