State veterans office and ECHO outline housing support, announce March job fairs

Representatives from the South Carolina veterans office and the Eastern Carolina Housing Organization (ECHO) presented to Sumter County Council on Jan. 25 about services for veterans, including housing assistance and employment support.
Kailay Washington and Jade Berkeley spoke on behalf of the state veterans affairs office, describing regional coordination and available support. Berkeley, who was described as an integrated officer for the area, said the office coordinates employment, housing and health resources. She announced a virtual job fair for veterans on March 8, 2022, and an in-person job fair on March 9, 2022; additional details will be provided.
Dr. Ann Galvez, chief innovation officer for ECHO, described the organization’s role in identifying housing for veterans and breaking the cycle of homelessness through partnerships with local agencies such as United Ministries and the YWCA. Matt Whitener summarized ECHO’s six-step housing-placement process, which includes local-agency coordination, assessment and eligibility, housing search and case management. ECHO serves the Pee Dee region of 13 counties and asked local officials and partners to refer veterans in need of housing assistance.
