Sumter County Council honors two deputies with Medal of Valor for rescue

Sumter County Council on Jan. 25 recognized Corporal Matthew Barwick and Corporal Bradley Hynes, who received the S.C. Sheriff’s Association Medal of Valor for rescuing a man attempting suicide. The county presented each officer with a gift and praised their actions.
Chairman James T. McCain, Jr. presented gifts on behalf of Sumter County Council to Corporal Matthew Barwick and Corporal Bradley Hynes after Chief Hampton Gardner reported both had received the Medal of Valor from the South Carolina Sheriff’s Association on Jan. 20, 2022.
Chief Gardner described the deputies’ actions while responding to a person attempting suicide, saying they caught the man as he fell and then cut the rope. The two officers thanked the Sheriff’s Office and Council for recognizing them. “To be at the right place at the right time to save someone’s life is truly a blessing,” the officers said when speaking to the meeting.
The recognition was presented early in the Jan. 25 council meeting; no formal action beyond the presentation was required. The county’s minutes note that photographs were taken following the presentation.
Council adjourned after completing the meeting’s business; no further follow-up or formal direction to staff was recorded regarding the recognition.
