Council hears public-safety fixes for hazardous pedestrian crossing at N. Pike Road and Highway 378/76

Sumter County Council’s Public Safety Committee reported March 8 on concerns about people crossing Highway 378/76 near N. Pike Road and discussed immediate and longer-term measures to reduce risk.
Committee Chair Carlton B. Washington said the Sheriff’s Office is working with the City of Sumter Police Department and the South Carolina Department of Transportation to implement short-term actions. Washington listed five suggested measures: law-enforcement visits to the neighborhood with warnings or tickets for unsafe crossings; placement of a traffic-speed trailer to slow vehicles; erecting a fence with SCDOT to deter foot traffic across the highway; improving lighting in the area; and scheduling joint meetings among county, city and state agencies to pursue permanent engineering or policy solutions.
During public comment, Dr. Brenda Williams of Family Unit, Inc. said she will meet with a financially capable individual to explore options for a store or similar amenity on the north side of Pike Road to reduce the need for residents to cross the highway and said she would keep council informed.
No formal council vote or funding appropriation for the measures was recorded in the minutes; the items appear as committee recommendations and interagency tasks for follow-up.
