Lewiston council approves appointments, surplus equipment and hears reports on library fundraising, rodeo ticketing and short-term rentals

The Lewiston City Council on Jan. 20 approved a series of routine motions, appointed a new library board member and a Planning & Zoning commissioner, and heard reports from councilmembers on public safety, events and planning work.
Appointments and votes: Mayor Bodily moved and the council unanimously approved the appointment of Tova Jones to the Lewiston Library Board. Councilmember Morrison moved and the council unanimously approved reappointing Jarred Glover to the Planning & Zoning Commission after he had served a partial term. Councilmember Simper moved, and the council unanimously voted to surplus and discard an old theatre vacuum that had been replaced by donated equipment. The council also unanimously approved the Dec. 16, 2025 minutes.

Councilmember reports and local business: Councilmember Jonna Westover said the fire department brush truck will be repaired, three residents became EMS certified and she will handle booking entertainment for Fourth of July events (contact: Jarrica Jameison). Councilmember Jason Trexler reported the library fundraiser sold 31 tickets at $30 each and that an auction raised over $900. Councilmember Simper raised concerns about farm debris on roads from a nearby dairy; the farmer told Simper that installing another lagoon and a separator should reduce the debris by about 60%. Simper said digital ticketing for the Fourth of July rodeo is not feasible now and proposed better fencing to control entrances. Councilmember Morrison said Planning & Zoning has begun drafting a short-term rental ordinance; short-term rentals are currently allowed as a conditional use and the ordinance would clarify local rules. Councilmember Bodily said he plans to open the Master Fee Schedule next month to discuss ballroom rental pricing and possible half-day rental options.
The council adjourned following the scheduled reports.
