Screven County commissioners approve sheriff’s department security upgrades and three new vehicles

The Screven County Board of Commissioners unanimously approved a series of items for the Sheriff’s Department at its March 25, 2025, meeting, including security upgrades, communications repairs and authorization to purchase three vehicles.
During new business, Commissioner J.C. Warren moved to accept an estimate from Montgomery Technology Systems of $22,755.47 for lock repairs at the Sheriff’s Department, with funds to come from Jail Funds; Commissioner Edwin Lovett seconded and the motion carried. Sheriff Norman Royal had recommended approval of a camera/security upgrade, and Commissioner Justin Smith moved to accept Counts Communications’ quote for $71,200, with Commissioner J.C. Warren seconding; the board approved the expenditure to be paid from Jail Funds.
County Manager Lori Burke told the board the Sheriff requested three vehicles — one patrol vehicle, one vehicle for the sheriff and one for the investigator — and recommended the purchase be funded from 2019 SPLOST. Commissioner Ben Thompson moved to buy two Chevrolet vehicles from Hardy Automotive and one Ford F-150 from Sylvania Ford, with a maximum combined spend of $175,000 using 2019 SPLOST funds; Commissioner J.C. Warren seconded and the motion passed unanimously. The board also approved a Counts Communications quote of $34,000 for repairs to the communication/intercom system and authorized miscellaneous Sheriff’s Department repair expenses totaling $1,240.55, both to be paid from Jail Funds; those motions were moved and seconded as recorded and carried by unanimous vote.
All motions during the meeting passed unanimously. Commissioner Mike Dixon was recorded as absent. The board adjourned at 6:22 p.m.
