Screven County commissioners unanimously approve rezoning, radio-system contract and courthouse chiller repairs

The Screven County Board of Commissioners met at the Screven County Courthouse on April 8, 2025, and voted unanimously on several routine and infrastructure items, including a rezoning of 18.33 acres on Savannah River Parkway and contracts to update the county radio system and repair courthouse equipment.
Commissioner Ben Thompson moved to approve the agenda at the start of the meeting; Commissioner Justin Smith seconded, and the motion carried by unanimous vote. Commissioner Edwin Lovett then moved to approve the minutes of the March 25, 2025 meeting; Commissioner Ben Thompson seconded and that motion also passed unanimously.
During a public hearing, the board considered a Planning & Zoning Board recommendation to rezone 18.33 acres on Savannah River Parkway owned by Clint H & Lisa H Hurst from Residential (R-1) to Highway Commercial (HC) for use as a commercial development site. Commissioner Ben Thompson moved to approve the Planning & Zoning Board recommendation; Commissioner Justin Smith seconded and the motion passed unanimously.
Commissioner Rosa Romeo moved to approve a quoted update to the county Hazard Mitigation Plan; Commissioner J.C. Warren seconded. County Manager Lori Burke told the board the update would be paid by a grant. The motion carried by unanimous vote.
The board also approved a contract and lease agreement with Motorola Solutions for a radio system upgrade after Commissioner J.C. Warren moved for approval and Commissioner Rosa Romeo seconded. That motion passed unanimously.
For courthouse maintenance, Commissioner Ben Thompson moved to approve a $12,675 quote from Augusta Chiller to repair and treat the courthouse filtration system; Commissioner Rosa Romeo seconded and the motion carried.
County Manager Lori Burke told the board they needed to schedule a budget workshop; the board tentatively set the workshop for Tuesday, April 22, 2025, at 8:00 a.m. No executive session was required, and Chairman Will Boyd adjourned the meeting at 6:20 p.m.
