Screven County commissioners approve equipment purchases, an IGA with DOC and several reappointments

The Screven County Board of Commissioners met at the Screven County Courthouse on June 10, 2025, and unanimously approved a series of routine measures including equipment purchases, contracts and several appointments.
Vice-Chairman J.C. Warren presided in Chairman Will Boyd’s absence. Commissioner Justin Smith moved to approve a $28,875 quote from Augusta Chiller for the county boiler, to be paid from SPLOST funds; Commissioner Rosa Romeo seconded and the motion carried by unanimous vote. The board also approved an intergovernmental agreement with the Georgia Department of Corrections to house state inmates at $30 per day for FY 2025/26 after a motion by Commissioner Ben Thompson and a second from Commissioner Romeo.
The board adopted a resolution establishing terms for the Board of Tax Assessors on a motion from Commissioner Mike Dixon, seconded by Commissioner Edwin Lovett. On transportation funding, Commissioner Smith moved to allocate $225,000 in TSPLOST funds to purchase equipment for the Roads Department and to waive the competitive bid process because the board deemed it impractical; Commissioner Ben Thompson seconded and the measure passed unanimously. The board appointed Chairman Will Boyd to oversee and handle the sale process related to that allocation.
Several appointments and reappointments were approved without discussion: Chase Collins was appointed to the Recreation Advisory Committee; Pauline Watson was reappointed to the Library Board; Warren Poythress and Casey Sowell were reappointed to the Planning & Zoning Board; William Bland was reappointed as the CRC at-large representative; and Bobby Jones was reappointed to the Coastal Workforce Development Board.
During commission and staff reports, Commissioner Rosa Romeo announced a Community Juneteenth Celebration at the Hawk Center on June 19, 2025, at 10:00 a.m. County Manager Lori Burke noted the Chamber of Commerce’s annual “Red, White and Boom” event on June 29, 2025. Commissioner Mike Dixon said the Recreation Department will host summer tournaments, and Lagina Evans, identified in the meeting as CFO of Optim Medical Screven, gave an update on the hospital’s status.
The board entered executive session at 6:21 p.m. for personnel matters and returned to regular session at 7:10 p.m.; after returning the board approved the executive session minutes and Vice-Chairman J.C. Warren adjourned the meeting.
