Resident urges TNR program; courthouse use for MLK Parade approved; county introduces new EMS director

At the Dec. 9 meeting Dorothy Shultz requested county support for a Trap-Neuter-Return (TNR) program for feral cats; the board approved courthouse use for an MLK Parade event and introduced Caleb Martin as the new County EMS Director. Several staff and department event announcements were made.
During the Screven County Board of Commissioners meeting on Dec. 9, Ms. Dorothy Shultz asked the county for help developing a trap–neuter–return (TNR) program, saying she has been rescuing cats from the Newington dump site and having them fixed.
Rev. Uley Robbins asked to use the courthouse after the MLK Parade on Jan. 17, 2025 at 1:00 p.m. Commissioner Rosa Romeo moved to approve the use of the courthouse after the parade starting at 1:00 p.m.; Commissioner J.C. Warren seconded and the motion carried by unanimous vote.
The board also recorded staff reports and announcements: holiday courthouse closings were set for Dec. 24–26 and Dec. 25–26; Caleb Martin was introduced as the new County EMS Director; Lagina Evans provided an update on the hospital; the Fire Department and the Sheriff’s Office each announced Christmas parties on Dec. 18, 2025 at 6:30 p.m., and the Fire Department open house was scheduled for Jan. 8, 2025 at 6:30 p.m. Commissioner J.C. Warren thanked Roads and Bridges for fixing Jackson Road to permit a funeral.
