Springville council approves up to $69,000 for playground upgrades

The Springville City Council voted to approve playground equipment purchases and related site work not to exceed $69,000, council members said during a work session. The package covers a new playground feature with a shade, engineered wood mulch for several parks, drainage installation and replacement of vandalized components.
Rick Hopkins, who briefed the council on the project, said the plan includes lowering warped borders to reduce trip hazards, adding French drains and replacing two vandalized features. "If I tell Struthers to go forward with this playground tomorrow, we are 4 to 6 weeks out before delivery," Hopkins said, adding that playground closures would last about two to three weeks for installation.
Hopkins presented line-item estimates that together produced a consolidated project total he described as about $68,000; he said the city has $73,000 budgeted in the property-improvements line for the year. The quoted package is from GameTime and would be purchased through the Omnia cooperative contract to avoid a separate bid process, Hopkins said.
Council members and residents emphasized safety and the park's value as a community draw. One council member noted the park draws visitors from other communities and encouraged timely action so the playground is ready for spring events. Hopkins also said cameras have helped deter vandalism and that replacing damaged pieces is part of the current request.
The council approved the motion to fund the purchase and related work (motion noted in the meeting as made by Council Member Ward and seconded by Council Member Vinson). Following the vote the mayor said the council would not need additional funding unless unforeseen circumstances arise.
Next steps: Hopkins will seek an airtight delivery date and proceed with ordering; council members said they expect the work to be scheduled to avoid major community events.
