Cowley County commissioners asked staff to draft a letter opposing Evergy’s preferred transmission‑line route after County Administrator Lucas Goff presented the company’s notice at the Jan. 6 meeting.
Goff said the county has no authority to override the Kansas Corporation Commission but can submit comments; commissioners directed staff to prepare an opposition letter. Winfield area resident Kevin McFarland told the commission he opposed the route because of its nearness to Strother Field airport and to the hospital and said large 350‑foot easements would split previously undeveloped land. Vice Chairman Alan Groom asked how to get on the hearing docket; Goff agreed to add him.
The commission did not vote on formal action to file comments but instructed staff to draft the letter and pursue inclusion on the docket for the upcoming hearing.
