Cowley County commissioners approve consent agenda, renew Murk’s Corner beverage license and discuss Evergy line routing

The Cowley County Board of County Commissioners approved its consent agenda and renewed a cereal malt beverage license for Murk’s Corner during a Dec. 2, 2025 regular meeting, and heard updates on a proposed Evergy transmission line route and a Creswell Township road vacation.
At the meeting, Commissioner Alan Groom moved and Vice Chairman Jim Maxwell seconded approval of the consent agenda; the motion passed on a 3-0 vote. Chairman Wayne Wilt then noted the commission would not take up the Creswell Township road vacation at that time.
County Administrator Lucas Goff briefed the board on an Evergy routing study for the Buffalo Flats to Delaware 345-kilovolt transmission line project. Commissioners discussed reports that some western Kansas landowners had signed documents they believed were easements but which may have conveyed other rights; the commissioners urged residents to be diligent when dealing with Evergy. Goff also noted the road and bridge project report for December was included in the meeting packet and that commissioners had no questions.
The commission presented an employee recognition award to Debi Snell for 39 years of service to Cowley County.
County Clerk Karen Madison introduced an application from Murray Mullis doing business as Murk’s Corner for renewal of a cereal malt beverage license to sell unopened product. Commissioner Groom moved to approve the renewal; Vice Chairman Maxwell seconded and the license renewal passed 3-0.
County Counselor Mark Krusor updated the board on the Creswell Township road vacation, reporting that a portion of 77th Road is owned by the federal government and that he has had difficulty determining who must be notified. Krusor said he was hesitant to spend money pursuing an owner if doing so required a paid search; commissioners indicated they did not want to proceed further with the vacation if contacting the federal government carried a fee. County Administrator Lucas Goff said he would work with Krusor to try to resolve the notification issue.
Goff reminded the board and public that all commissioners plan to attend the Kansas Association of Counties annual conference in Wichita next week. Chairman Wilt moved and Vice Chairman Maxwell seconded to adjourn at 9:14 a.m.; the vote was 3-0.
