At Thursday's meeting the Electoral Board discussed how to assign Officers of Election for the November general election and emphasized compliance with Code 24.2-115, which governs party representation at precincts. The secretary said assignments cannot be made until willingness-to-work forms are returned.
The registrar said he will send letters to precincts informing them of a new law prohibiting firearms within 40 feet of polling places so fire-department personnel who may arrive for calls understand the rule. The board also agreed the secretary will coordinate inspections of polling places for HAVA compliance.
The registrar said he would ask at a statewide ELECT training in Salem about whether legal counsel is available for officers of elections and would report back in September. No changes to assignments or legal representation were decided at the meeting.
