Charlotte County Electoral Board readies 2022–23 budget, proposes higher pay for poll workers

Chairman Glenn Baker said the Charlotte County Electoral Board met at 10 a.m. on Feb. 21 to prepare its proposed 2022–23 budget for submission to the Charlotte County Board of Supervisors. Present were Vice Chairman Glenwood Foster, Secretary Aubrey Fane, Interim General Registrar Heather Harding and General Registrar Elect Virginia Booth. Roscoe Eubanks of Drakes Branch attended as an observer.
Baker said the budget would take effect July 1, 2022, and expire June 30, 2023. The board noted that "salaries and wages for Board Members are set by VA code 24.2-116," a statutory constraint the budget references. The board also recorded projected poll-worker wages tied to expected code changes requiring compensation at minimum-wage levels.
The proposed pay for the general election included seven chiefs at 16 hours each paid $15 per hour, seven assistant chiefs at 15 hours each paid $14 per hour, and 14 officers at 15 hours each paid $12 per hour. The meeting minutes reference an attached proposed budget with additional line-item detail.
Vice Chairman Glenwood Foster moved to adjourn the session; Secretary Aubrey Fane seconded and the motion carried at about 12:30 p.m. The board set its next stated meeting for March 3, 2022.
The called meeting was limited to preparing the budget; no other business was transacted during the session.
