Springville — The City Council voted to approve installation of a flagpole at the Welcome Center and granted permission for the Daughters of the American Revolution to plant a commemorative “Liberty Tree” at the Welcome Center.
Donna Davis, regent of the Butte Springs chapter of the DAR, told the council the chapter would provide both the tree and a plaque marking the 250th anniversary of the American Revolution. “We will provide the tree, the plaque,” Davis said, describing plans for a protected planting area so maintenance equipment won’t damage the sapling.
The council added the planting to the agenda and approved it after a short discussion. Council member Reeves made the motion to approve the Liberty Tree planting; Council member Henning seconded and the motion carried.
The item follows an earlier council vote to permit the DAR’s flagpole and flag installation at the Welcome Center, an item the council carried over from a previous meeting. City staff said the DAR work was discussed with the Parks/Welcome Center team and that the city would coordinate final siting and any necessary ground protections.
The council did not set a planting date at the meeting; Davis said the chapter envisioned the tree as part of a broader commemoration of the country’s 250th anniversary and suggested the Welcome Center as an accessible site for visitors and residents.
Next steps: staff will confirm the exact planting location and maintenance plan with the DAR and report back to the council if site or safety concerns require further action.
