Summary
County fleet mechanic warned commissioners that multiple county vehicles exceed safe service mileage; the court approved a $24,826.52 Parks truck purchase and a $25,000 transfer from reserves, with one dissenting vote.
A county fleet mechanic’s written warning about high-mileage county vehicles featured in Spencer County Fiscal Court’s Jan. 6 meeting as the court approved a new Parks Department truck and related budget transfers.
Gary Day, identified in meeting documents as Spencer County's fleet mechanic, told the court in a written letter that many county vehicles show "substantial wear," citing the Parks Department's best truck at roughly 220,000 miles and ambulances with 140,000–150,000 miles. "I am concerned that the vehicles are becoming unsafe for county employees as they continue to age and deteriorate," Day wrote in the letter read during committee reports.
Against that backdrop, the court approved purchasing a truck for the Parks Department from Bill Collins Ford for $24,826.52. The court also approved transferring $25,000 from a reserves account to the parks vehicles account to cover costs. The motion carried with all members present voting "aye" except Brett Beaverson, Esq., who voted "nay."
Discussion at the meeting included suggestions to purchase multiple new trucks to rotate older vehicles to other departments and a request from the Jailer for guidance on vehicle needs for the jail, though no further purchases were authorized at the meeting.
The court did not adopt a formal replacement schedule; the fleet mechanic's letter and subsequent dialogue signal an administrative need to prioritize capital replacement planning.
