Jailer urges higher part-time pay and court hears phone-system cost analysis for jail

Simpson County's Jailer told the fiscal court Sept. 20 that part-time hires at $15/hour are driving overtime costs; the court also heard that switching the jail's phone system likely would not produce significant savings.
Jailer Eric Vaughn told the Simpson County Fiscal Court on Sept. 20 that hiring part-time workers at $15 per hour has increased reliance on full-time staff and overtime. Vaughn recommended raising the part-time starting wage to $16–$16.50 per hour to reduce overtime and training costs.
Judge Mason Bames said he would run overtime-cost numbers for the fiscal year and Vaughn agreed to provide the court with the cost of training overtime incurred so far to give the court accurate figures for a staffing-cost analysis.
Magistrate Marty Chandler also questioned why the jail uses a different phone vendor (Go To Communications) than other county departments. IT Operations Adam Wilshire told the court that because of the number of jail phones required, there would be little cost savings in moving the jail to the county phone system.
Court members treated the pay and phone-system items as operational matters and asked for numerical backup; no final wage-rate change for part-time employees was adopted at the Sept. 20 meeting.
