Local groups press Lunenburg supervisors for budget support; loggers ask tax exemption

Several community organizations and stakeholders presented budget requests and tax-policy proposals to the Lunenburg County Board of Supervisors on April 8 as the county begins FY2021-22 budget preparations.
Ms. Sarah Maddox of the Piedmont Area Veterans Council outlined the volunteer-run group's services across eight counties and asked the board to consider funding the council in the coming fiscal year. County Attorney Frank Rennie, who is a veteran, urged the board to support the council if feasible.
Ron Jenkins of the Virginia Loggers Association asked the board to consider exempting forest-harvesting machinery from the machinery and tools tax and from personal property taxes, citing high equipment and overhead costs for loggers. Administrator Tracy M. Gee estimated the county revenue loss from such exemptions at about $69,000 if adopted.
Dr. Susan Baker of Crossroad Community Services Board requested level funding; CCSB's local portion for Lunenburg is $53,000. Supervisor Mike Hankins urged the board and finance committee to work toward increasing Piedmont Senior Resources support from the current $6,000 toward the full requested $16,000 over time.
Administrator Gee reminded departments to submit flat funded budget requests or to flag specific needs, and told the board community partners had been invited to present ahead of the May budget review.
