Lunenburg schools seek $1.7 million in ESSER funds to replace elementary HVAC systems as enrollment edges up

Assistant School Superintendent James Abernathy reported April 8 that Lunenburg County Public Schools applied in March for $1.7 million in ESSER II CARES Act funds to replace HVAC systems at both elementary schools and to help offset lost revenue from sporting-event attendance.
Abernathy said a potential ESSER III distribution is also being discussed; if awarded, ESSER III funds would be used to pay remaining HVAC costs and to maintain technology purchased earlier with CARES Act funds. He reported current enrollment at 1,536 students, up from the budgeted 1,530, which will yield an additional approximately $12,000 in federal funding and requires an increased local match.
Supervisor Robert Zava noted the Finance Committee reviewed the school board’s FY2021-22 budget request, which now includes an additional local effort estimate of $550,000 tied to the higher enrollment figure.
The school division will await state/federal award decisions before finalizing the capital and operating impacts on the county budget.
