Lunenburg schools plan in-person opening Aug. 16; district proposes $3.8 million HVAC and HEPA updates

Lunenburg County Public Schools will open the 2021–22 school year on Monday, Aug. 16, for five days per week of in-person instruction, with a virtual option available for families who choose remote learning, Assistant Superintendent and Finance Director James Abernathy told the Board of Supervisors on Aug. 12.
Abernathy said bus capacity will return to normal levels and the district is working to install HEPA filters on all buses. He said all students and staff will be required to wear masks indoors; outdoor masking will be optional. The district also will continue offering free lunches.
On school facilities, Abernathy said the district plans to use Elementary and Secondary School Emergency Relief (ESSER III) funds to update HVAC systems at elementary schools and to install HEPA filtration systems. He provided an estimated cost of about $3.8 million and said the district expects the work to qualify for federal funding assistance.
The superintendent’s office also indicated there may be some carryover funds from the 2020–21 fiscal year to help with the work. No vote on specific contracts or award amounts was recorded at the meeting; the board received the report and will consider financing and procurement in forthcoming work sessions or meetings as required.
