Lunenburg supervisors appoint redistricting committee after 2020 Census shows four districts out of compliance

County Attorney Frank Rennie reported that the 2020 Census numbers provided to localities show four of Lunenburg County’s seven supervisor districts exceed the five‑percent population‑variance guideline and require restructuring. Rennie noted that the prison population would no longer be counted under the new data and recommended the board appoint a committee to draft new district boundaries within roughly 60 days.
The board appointed a committee that will include Supervisors Alvester Edmonds and Mike Hankins; Electoral Board Secretary Oliver Wright; Registrar Carolyn Parsons; Deputy County Administrator Nicole Clark; County Attorney Frank Rennie IV and attorney Drew DiStanislao; and residents Patricia Harper‑Tunley and James “Buck” Tharpe Jr. The appointment passed on a unanimous 7–0 roll call vote.
Rennie said the committee should include representation from the board, administration, county attorney and the community and that it would work under statutory timelines to produce recommended district maps. The board’s action initiates a process that must meet state guidance for equal population distribution across seats.
Next steps: the redistricting committee will convene to analyze census data and develop proposed district adjustments for the board’s consideration.
